Iris reading from a photo: how to photograph your eye

Published on

Close-up of an eye whose iris, with golden and blue-green fibres, looks like a small galaxy.

To read your iris, all you need is a photo of your eye taken with your phone. Here you will see how to take it, what becomes of that photo, the four iris types and the signs the reading looks at. And also what it does not do.

One photo, one eye

Before the photo, there are a few questions: your first name, your gender, your date of birth, then four very simple questions. The whole thing takes about two minutes. There are no right or wrong answers.

Then comes the photo. One eye is enough: the reading starts from a single iris. The screen shows you examples of the photos expected, so you know what a good image looks like.

With someone next to you

Use the phone's rear camera, with the flash on, or settle in sunlight. Ask the person helping you to take the photo as close to your eye as possible, then check that your whole iris is visible.

If an eyelid hides a part of it, you can gently move it aside with your fingers so the whole iris shows. That is the advice the screen itself gives.

Alone in front of the mirror

If you are alone, the rear camera and the flash work too. Stand in front of a mirror, with the phone turned toward you, and look at the screen in the mirror to aim at your eye. The mirror and the light of a bathroom are usually just fine.

You can also choose a file you already have on your phone, if you have a nice photo of your eye.

What the photo must show

Before keeping your photo, Profondio checks three things: that it really is an eye, that the iris is sharp enough for its fibres to be told apart, and that the whole circle of the iris is in the image. If not, you know right away, with a clear message: no eye can be seen, the photo is blurry, or the iris is cut off. You just have to retake it.

It does not need to be perfect. Above all it should be taken up close, with light. Palm reading also starts from a photo, and you can see how to take it in the article on palm reading.

What becomes of your photo

On a photo taken with a phone, your eye is often tiny in the image. So the reading first finds where the iris is, cuts out a tight square around it, then makes that iris sharper. The cropping matters: on the whole photo, the retouching tool would tend to invent an ordinary iris instead of keeping yours.

Your sharpened iris then appears at the top of your reading, and you can save it. It can only be seen from your reading. Your reading is prepared in your space, and an email lets you know as soon as it is ready.

The four iris types

The reading begins with the type of your iris. There are four, according to the Rayid tradition. Flower, when the openings of the iris are rounded. Jewel, when you see pigment dots. Stream, when the fibres are regular and run out from the centre like rays. Shaker, when you find both openings and dots.

The reading names your type and uses it to speak about your deep nature: what carries you, and what takes you more effort. It is the first of the ten parts of your reading.

The signs the reading looks at

Each part follows one sign of your iris and links it to a trait of character, according to the symbolic tradition of iris reading. The colour and its shades speak of your energy. The collarette, that wavy ring around the pupil, speaks of your inner balance. The openings tell of your heart and the way you love, with a paragraph adapted to your love situation. The pigment spots speak of the way you think and decide.

The fibres speak of your endurance, with one paragraph on your work and another on your relationship with money, without ever naming an amount or announcing a loss. The pupil, compared with the iris, speaks of your openness to others. The rings and the edge of the iris speak of the tensions you carry. If your iris has no spots, the reading never sees a lack in that. If it has no rings, it simply says so, without inventing any, and reads instead the calm this suggests.

Each part begins with a short sentence saying what your iris shows, then at least one paragraph explaining it. Two last parts tie everything together: what keeps coming back in your life, then your iris read as a whole.

How your answers enter the reading

Your answers never replace what your iris shows. They are used to choose what the reading highlights. It takes into account your love situation, what matters most to you right now, what people say about your gaze and the way you live your emotions. It adds your sign, worked out from your date of birth.

That is what makes your reading personal. If you like this idea of a gaze that tells something about you, you will find the same logic in the portrait of your soulmate, which also starts from your answers.

What the reading does not do

It is a symbolic reading. It gives you words to think about yourself, about the way you love and decide, and it can be a pleasure to read. It decides nothing for you.

It is never an opinion on your health, nor a prediction about how long you will live. If your eyesight or your health worries you, it is a health professional you should talk to. And if the photo does not clearly show an iris, the reading is not written: it does not pretend to see what is not there.

Getting started

Pick a moment of good light, hold the phone close to your eye, and check that the whole iris is visible. When you are ready, you can start your iris reading.
