The Oracle: one card at a time, from tarot to fortune cookies
Published on

The Oracle from Profondio is a stack of cards you scroll through, one per screen. There is tarot, fortune cookies, positive thoughts and questions to ask yourself. Here is what it really contains, how your feed is put together, and what it will never do.
One card per screen
When you open the Oracle, you see just one card, in the middle of the screen. You read it, you flip it if it is face down, then you swipe up to move on to the next one. There is no menu to browse and no choice to make before you start.
The feed mixes four kinds of cards: 624 positive thoughts, 300 fortune cookies, 200 questions to ask yourself, and tarot. If a thought speaks to you, you can send it to someone, as an image when your device allows it, and, if your access allows it, keep it in your favorites by tapping the heart. A soft background soundscape goes with the feed, and you can turn it off with the button at the top right.
The card of the day
The first card of the feed is your card of the day. It is one of the 22 major arcana of the Marseille tarot, from the Magician to the Fool. It is chosen from your account and the date: you find the same one all day long, even if you reopen the Oracle ten times. The day is counted in UTC time: it changes at midnight UTC, which is 1 or 2 am in France.
When you flip it, you can open its reading. It comes as three short texts, one for love, one for career, one for money. These texts are written in advance for each of the 22 cards. They do not speak about you in particular: they give you a direction to think about for a moment.
How your feed is put together
The Oracle draws each card at random from the four families, with proportions that are deliberate: about one card in two is a thought, and the rest is shared between fortune cookies, tarot and questions, a little less for the questions. It avoids showing you two cards of the same family in a row, so the feed never becomes monotonous.
The feed comes in two forms, depending on your access. In the first, it holds ten cards a day, card of the day included, the same ones all day long. When you have seen them all, the Oracle invites you to come back the next day for ten new ones.
In the second, the feed goes on without end, and the Oracle remembers, on your device, where you stopped. On your next visit, it picks up each pile where it left off, so that it does not show you again what you have just read.
The rarer cards
Now and then, a golden card takes the place of an ordinary one. It is rare, about one in a hundred, and never among the first three cards of the feed. Its message is written for your zodiac sign when the Oracle knows it, with six per sign, so 72 messages in all. If your first name is known, forty other messages call you by your first name.
From time to time, never among the first five cards, a card invites you to ask a question to Kai, the Profondio astrologer: it opens the chat with a question already written. Also from time to time, never among the first six, a card presents one of the site's longer readings and leads to its page: the soulmate, the palm, the iris, the future baby, a past life or compatibility. You are not obliged to do anything: you swipe, and the next card arrives. To see how the Oracle fits in with the rest of your space, you can read our article on the daily space.
The six tarot spreads
Simple tarot cards are one of the 22 arcana to flip over, with a short text about love, career or money. Between them, full spreads are slipped in: one tarot card in two is a spread, in an order that changes with each visit, until all six have come up. You play them without leaving the feed. Yes or no tarot: you draw one card and the answer is yes, no or maybe. Of the 22 cards, 13 say yes, 5 say no and 4 say maybe, and each card always keeps the same answer. Past, present, future tarot: three cards, and a sentence of advice at the end.
Past love clarity tarot: one card, to look at where an old story stands. Love triangle tarot: three cards, one for you and one for each of the two other people. True compatibility tarot: one card for a relationship that is going on now. Tarot for healing after a break-up: two cards, the first about what still holds you back, the second, which can only be drawn after the first, about the step to take to move forward.
Each position is drawn separately, with a touch. The same card never comes up twice in the same spread. The cards drawn stay displayed, and you can redo the spread 24 hours later. The reading, which is longer, rises from the bottom of the screen in a panel, with a button to move on to the next card.
What the Oracle does not do
The Oracle does not predict your future. The cards are drawn by the program, at random, except the card of the day, which a simple calculation chooses, knowing nothing about your life. The fortune cookies, the thoughts and the card readings are texts written in advance, the same for everyone, except for the golden messages, which know your sign or your first name. A fortune cookie that promises a lovely surprise has seen nothing of your week: it is there to make you smile.
The questions work the same way. You choose one answer out of three, and you receive a short reading written in advance for that answer. It does not know you, but it can help you put a word on what you feel. A card, even the one from the yes or no tarot, must never decide for you. For an important decision, talk to someone you trust.
An appointment of a few minutes
The Oracle lends itself to a small daily appointment: you flip your card of the day, you scroll through a few cards, you stop whenever you like. If you allow notifications, a thought reaches you every evening between 7 and 8 pm, your local time, with a link that reopens the Oracle. As long as they are not switched on for your device, a card slipped into the feed suggests them, for a few visits only.
If you add Profondio to your phone's home screen, the Oracle opens full screen, like an app. Where your browser can install it, another card in the feed suggests it. The Oracle also has its presentation page, which used to be the one for positive thoughts.
To get started
Open the Oracle, flip your card of the day and read its three texts. Ask yourself which one speaks to you today. Then let the feed go on until a card that makes you want to stop, and, if your access allows it, keep as a favorite the thought that touches you.
