Your past life on Profondio: how it is chosen, step by step

Published on

An old stone path disappearing into a misty landscape at dusk, an old lantern lit in the foreground, a starry sky.

Some places give you goosebumps, some eras draw you in for no reason. The past life reading starts from there. Here, step by step, is how your life is chosen, what becomes of your selfie and what the story contains. And also what this reading does not say.

What the questionnaire asks you

First, a few words about you: your first name, whether you are a woman or a man, and your date of birth. Then come nine questions, all with a single answer, and there is no right or wrong answer. Allow about three minutes.

These questions are not about your life today, but about what moves you without explanation. Which era draws you. Which part of the world stirs something in you. Which landscape soothes you the most, which talent you have without having learned it, which ancient object speaks to you. Then a recurring dream, a fear that seems to come from nowhere, whether you have ever felt you were reliving a moment, and what you are missing without being able to explain it.

The answers that point to your life

Not all the answers serve the same purpose. Four of them choose the type of person you may have been: the landscape, the talent, the object and the dream. Each one points to one of eight great types of life: the travellers, the nobles, the people of the land, the warriors, the sacred souls, the creators, the scholars and the healers. The talent and the object count double. If you have no recurring dream, that question steers nothing.

The fear for no reason, the déjà vu and what you are missing do not choose your life. They wait further on: they are used by the story, which draws on them to link that earlier life to what you feel today.

A catalogue of 40 lives

Your life is not invented at random each time. Profondio keeps a closed catalogue of 40 characters, five for each of the eight types. Once your type is found, your era and your region decide between the five: the region weighs twice as much as the era. If you answered “I don't know” to both of these questions, those two answers weigh nothing and the choice is made by a draw.

This draw is specific to your account and does not change: with the same answers, you always find the same life. Each character has a role, a place and a year, for example a harbour cartographer in Lisbon in 1492, or a noble of the imperial court of Kyoto in the 11th century. The role matches your gender, and your first name from back then is drawn from those of that era and that place. For the Lisbon cartographer, it would be Leonor or Catarina.

Your selfie, and what it keeps of you

Before discovering your life, you add a selfie. It stays private and is used only to create your past life portraits. The costume, the setting and the era come from the chosen character, and the face in the portrait is never hidden: no mask, no closed helmet, no veil.

But it is not your face copied. The skin and the features are those of the people of the place and time where you lived, wherever your selfie comes from. From the selfie, the portrait keeps your approximate age, the shape of your face, your gaze and your expression. It is a family resemblance, as with a distant ancestor, and the idea is that you recognise something of yourself in it. If your selfie cannot be used, the portrait is made from the character alone.

The story, part by part

The story has eight parts. The welcome tells you who you were, where and when, with your first name from back then. Then come your everyday life, with your family, your trade and your days, and the moment that changed everything. Next, the loves of that life, what you left behind, the traces of that life today, the lesson your soul came back to learn, and a conclusion.

Each part is written from your character, your answers and your sun sign, which comes from your date of birth. It is in the traces part that your fear for no reason, your impressions of déjà vu and your never-learned talent are linked to that life. In the lesson, it is what you are missing that is. If you want to compare with another reading that starts from a photo, the iris reading starts from a simple photo of your eye.

What this reading does not do

It proves nothing. The story is never presented as an established fact, and reincarnation is not demonstrated by a questionnaire. Your life is chosen from a catalogue of 40, whereas history is far vaster than 40 characters: it is a story that resembles you, not the truth of your past.

It does not predict your future and gives no health advice. The writing guidelines ask it to speak of tendencies and possibilities, never of an imposed destiny, and forbid it violent or graphic scenes: the moment that changed everything is never one, and if the end of that life is mentioned, it stays peaceful and brief. Read this story the way you read a tale that speaks to you, to reflect on what draws you and for the pleasure of it.

Another portrait imagined from your answers

If the idea of a portrait imagined from what you answer appeals to you, you can read how your future baby's portrait is drawn, in pencil, from your answers about yourself, about the other parent and about the family you dream of.

To get started

Prepare a clear selfie, facing the camera, in good light, and answer without thinking too much: it is the first instinct that counts, not the perfect answer. Whenever you like, you can discover your past life in about three minutes.

If you hesitate between several readings and don't know which one suits you, this article helps you choose the right reading according to what you are looking for.
